NUJ Benue State Council Speaks Out On Key Issues

Iorfa Akpen

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Benue State Council held its state congress on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at the NUJ House in Makurdi. The event brought together journalists to discuss pressing issues affecting the union and the state.

The congress expressed confidence in the national leadership of the union, appreciating their efforts in involving the Benue State Council in decision-making processes.

In a statement, the NUJ condemned the recent killings of innocent citizens in Katsina-Ala and Kwande Local Government Areas, calling on security agencies to intensify efforts to protect lives and property.

The union also appealed to the Benue State Government to provide relief to displaced persons affected by the attacks, highlighting the need for urgent support.

On a positive note, the NUJ commended the state government for its infrastructural development initiatives, particularly in road construction. However, it expressed concern over the slow pace of work on some projects, urging contractors to expedite action.

The affected roads include Achusa to Welfare Quarters Road, Gboko Road to Wurukum Roundabout, and Jonah Jang Crescent, among others. The union emphasized the need for swift completion to ease traffic congestion and environmental hazards.

As the Lenten and Ramadan seasons approach, the NUJ extended its best wishes to Christians and Muslims, calling for prayers for peace and unity in Benue State and Nigeria.

With the 2027 general elections looming, the union reminded journalists to maintain professionalism and uphold the ethics of their profession. The NUJ cautioned against partisanship and urged politicians to respect journalists’ independence.

The congress also called on the Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEEDS) to improve its service delivery to Benue State.

The NUJ urged the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to deploy personnel to traffic flashpoints, particularly Wurukum Roundabout, to manage traffic effectively.
