NSCDC Collaborate With Nasarawa State Ministry Of Environment To Combat Child Labor In Mining And Illegal Mining Activities

The Nasarawa State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources is joining forces with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to address the alarming involvement of minors in mining activities and to crack down on illegal mining operations.
This collaboration was solidified during a visit by the NSCDC Commandant for Nasarawa State, Brah Samson Umorou, to the office of the State Commissioner for the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Princess Dr. Margaret Elayo.
During the meeting, Dr. Elayo shared her heart-wrenching experiences from recent visits to mining sites for environmental impact assessments, expressing sorrow at witnessing minors, who should be in school, working in dangerous and terrifying mining pits.
Describing the situation as a “ticking time bomb” that could have catastrophic consequences if left unchecked, Dr. Elayo urgently appealed to Commander Umorou for support in her initiative aimed at rescuing these minors and preventing their involvement in mining activities.
Furthermore, Dr. Elayo raised concerns about the proliferation of illegal mining camps in Nasarawa State, warning that they pose significant security threats.
She stressed the necessity for the NSCDC to assist in dismantling these camps to protect the community.
In response, Commander Brah Samson Umorou assured Commissioner Dr. Elayo of the readiness of his men to tackle this pressing issue and take decisive action against any activities that threaten peace and order in Nasarawa State.
