No Work, No Pay: NUT Send SOS To Buhari

Nigeria Union of Teachers in Nasarawa state has sent a Save Our Soul (SOS) message to President Muhammadu Buhari to come to their rescue following their present predicament occasioned by percentage payment.

The state chairman of the Union, Comrade Jatau Tete Yohanna stated this through the treasury of the NUT Isa Mohammed at the state secretariat at the weekend, as the Union called on its members to remain indoor until the state government complied with their demands.

While reacting on the threat to replace striking workers with new crop of graduates, the NUT said the position of the state government is unconstitutional, saying the civil servants are been covered by the nation’s constitution.

“There was no room for the replacement of civil servants in the constitution” as he further disclosed that no end in sight to settle the lingering impasses between the NUT and the state government.

The chairman lamented the unnecessary deductions from teachers’ salary by the ministry for local government and chieftaincy affairs, demanding that their salary should be paid to the appropriate authority, the Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board (NSUBEB).

The NUT is also protesting over percentage payment of teachers which they said teachers are passing through hard times due to half salary being paid for the past eight months.

When asked whether there was an agreement reached, Comrade Tete said the state government is yet to call on the union for settlement ,also while fielding question over the imbroglio that ensued between NUT and BESAN ,a faction of the union which lead to litigations, he affirmed that the matter has already been resolved.

“There is no faction in Nasarawa NUT, he further maintained, all effort to speak the association of proprietors of private schools proved abortive, however unconfirmed source unveiled that private schools may join the ongoing organized labour strike by Monday.

A member of the association said the move was to join the strike in solidarity of NLC strike ,this he added compelled some schools to redress their exams time table backward.
