The North-East Development Commission (NEDC) has distributed food items to orphans and vulnerable households in Adamawa State as part of efforts to support disadvantaged members of society and ease the impact of prevailing economic challenges.
Speaking during the distribution exercise in Yola on Thursday, Lawan Hamidu, the NEDC Head of Resettlements and Early Recovery, said the intervention aligns with the commission’s mandate to promote the welfare of people across the North-East region.
Hamidu explained that the commission regularly sets aside relief materials for vulnerable groups whenever it identifies hardship within communities.
According to him, the food assistance is intended to cushion the effects of current socio-economic difficulties and improve the living conditions of beneficiaries.
He urged wealthy individuals and philanthropists to emulate the commission’s humanitarian efforts by extending support to vulnerable persons, noting that such gestures would contribute significantly to peace, stability, and social harmony in society.
Also speaking, Khalifa Lawan, the NEDC Coordinator in Adamawa State, disclosed that more than 150 organisations were targeted to benefit from the exercise.
He said the distributed items included rice, spaghetti, and cooking oil, and appealed to leaders of beneficiary organisations to ensure the materials reach the intended recipients.
In their separate remarks, Rev Victor Saje representative of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Malam Ismail Modibo, the Muslim Council of Nigeria in Adamawa State, commended the NEDC for the intervention.
They assured the commission that the food items would be distributed to the targeted beneficiaries across the 21 local government areas of the state.
