The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) will inaugurate its presidential campaign council for the 2027 general election on October 20.
The party is consulting its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, on key appointments to the council.
NDC National Chairman Cleopas Zuwoghe disclosed this on Saturday during a press conference in Abuja.
He said the party had prepared the organogram for the campaign council but was taking time to scrutinise prospective appointees to ensure their loyalty to the party and its presidential ticket.
Zuwoghe warned that appointing individuals with divided political loyalties could undermine the party’s campaign and jeopardise its chances in the 2027 elections.
“It is a sensitive election that we are going into. And we must check characters. It is not today you appoint one DG of your campaign. And in the middle of the campaign, you will hear that your DG is one leg in the NDC, one leg somewhere else,” he said.
“And will jeopardise the whole hope of this country. So they have to check and double-check.”
The chairman said the party had proposed a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting for October 20, when it would formally inaugurate the campaign council and issue certificates of return to its candidates.
According to him, the certificates will serve as formal confirmation that the individuals are the party’s duly recognised candidates for the forthcoming elections.
Zuwoghe also disclosed that the party planned to organise a dinner involving its candidates to strengthen cooperation and build synergy ahead of the campaigns.
He said the activities planned for October 20 would prepare the party to intensify its political engagements ahead of the 2027 general election.
The NDC chairman, however, rejected suggestions that the party had remained inactive ahead of the polls.
He said the party had already visited Sokoto and Kaduna states as part of its political activities and was scheduled to visit Enugu State on October 15.
Zuwoghe added that the party would unveil its political strategy in the coming days, insisting that its preparations went beyond the formal inauguration of the campaign council.
He said the NDC was focused on building an institution capable of delivering its objectives, adding that youth remained a major consideration in the party’s approach.
The planned inauguration comes as political parties prepare for the 2027 general election, with Obi and Kwankwaso expected to lead the NDC’s presidential ticket.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) opened the campaign window for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections in August.
