The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has sanctioned 45 Television and Radio stations across the country over violation the country’s broadcasting code during the 2019 electioneering campaigns.

The Director-General of the commission, Ishaq Modibbo Kawu, who disclosed this at a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, added that a fine of N500,000 was slammed on each of the defaulting stations.

Kawu stated that the decision was arrived at following the review of the 2019 electioneering broadcasts and campaign to ensure professionalism, good taste and decency in the election process.

According to him, failure to abide by the punitive measure, the commission would not hesitate to close down these stations, adding that national interest would not be sacrificed on the altar of some selfish or vested interest.

Kawu, therefore, called on the country’s broadcast stations to that are in the habit of putting a disclaimer before airing a hate speech to refrain from doing so, advising them to remember that putting a disclaimer does not absolve them of the editorial responsibility they have with the NBC and the Nigerian public.
