Council chairmen in Nasarawa state are to vacate office come March 24 2016, after spending twenty four months in office. Their tenure, it would be recalled was elongated by high court ruling in favour of council chairmen.

The lingering dust is yet to settle following the prolong wrangling of tenure elongation between the Nasarawa State House of Assembly and elected Local Government officials under the auspices of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria ,Nasarawa state wing.

It would be recalled that the High Court sitting in Lafia the Nasarawa state capital ruled in favoured of elected chairmen in the state, the lead counsel to ALGON Mary Onyeka described the one year tenure by the state House of Assembly as an aberration of the nation’s constitutional provision, Saying the Assembly members flouted the nation’s constitution.

Onyeka during a press conference said the verdict of Justice Aisha Ahmed of the High Court sitting in Lafia extended the one year tenure of Local Government to two years dated 15/07/2015″.

The lacuna surrounding the tenure of council chairmen continued to hinder the progress of Local councils in the state, This continued to spur rift between the executive and elected council officials, The lingering crisis over tenure elongation has been existing way back 2012 under the reign of former Governor, Aliyu Akwe Doma and the Assembly.

The chairman House committee on Information, Honorable Makpa Mala in a telephone interview confided that the 24/03/2016 dateline for the tenure of elected Council officials remain unshakable.

“The issues of tenure of Local Government officials is an issue that needed the application of laws of the land which is constitution, Our Constitution is clear, He unfolded.

Also contacted is the Honorable Muhammed Aga Muluku representing Nasarawa Eggon North (PDP) who said 24/03/2016 remain the dateline for the vacation of council chairmen, He also condemned the rumor making round that the Local Government chairmen bribed lawmakers .

Further findings unveiled that some of the chairmen may not go scot free, This following series of petitions written against some selected council boss who were found wanting, It was revealed that the last meeting held by the Local Government at Nasara Housing Estate did not hold water as no position was taken .
