The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has disowned a write-up circulating on social media regarding the 2027 Niger State governorship election, describing it as unauthorized and not reflective of his position or that of the ministry.
In a statement released today, the minister clarified that the article, which had generated significant attention online, was drafted and published by a junior aide without his knowledge or approval.
Mr Idris emphasized that the content does not represent his views or the official stance of the ministry.
“The publication of this write-up was entirely without my consent,” the statement read.
“It is misleading and could create confusion about the ministry’s position on political matters. I wish to categorically disown the article and clarify that it does not reflect my thoughts or directives.”
Following the incident, Mr Idris announced the immediate suspension of the aide responsible for the write-up pending a full investigation.
The aide is expected to account for how and why the article was disseminated without ministerial approval.
The minister also used the occasion to remind all staff of the ministry of the strict protocols surrounding public statements and publications, especially on politically sensitive issues, stressing the importance of official clearance before dissemination.
Political observers say the move reflects heightened sensitivity within government circles ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly in states like Niger, where political dynamics are increasingly scrutinized by the public and media.
This development comes amid rising concerns over the spread of unverified political content on social media platforms, which government officials warn can mislead the public and destabilize political discourse.
Mr Idris concluded the statement by urging citizens and media organizations to rely only on official communications from the Ministry of Information for accurate information.
