Kussah Shalum, the Chairman of Guyuk Local Government Area in Adamawa State, Northeastern Nigeria, has praised the benefits of local government autonomy, stating that it has significantly improved governance and development in his area.
Shalum commended Governor Ahmadu Fintiri for granting local governments full autonomy, allowing them to address the needs of their communities effectively.
He stressed that, the free hand and open-minded approach by governor Fintri has truly challenged every chairman to work harder.
” Now, each of us is focused on ensuring that our people receive tangible benefits from democracy,” Shalum added.
He noted that the harmonious relationship between local government chairmen and the governor has fueled healthy developmental competition. “Every chairman is engaged in projects that directly impact rural communities, ensuring they feel connected to the government they elected,” he stated.
In Guyuk Local Government, which comprises ten wards, each is experiencing visible development.
“Every ward is undergoing transformation with at least one major project, and the evidence is there for all to see,” Shalum emphasized.
The ongoing projects include the construction and renovation of schools, the establishment of modern healthcare facilities, and the development of rural roads.
According to the chairman, decisions are made based on the specific needs of the communities to improve their quality of life.
While commenting on the issue of teaming unemployed youths, Shalum highlighted Governor Fintiri’s initiative through the Poverty and Wealth Creation Agency (PAWECA), which trains young people in various vocational skills.
The program aims to empower them with employment opportunities and financial stability.
“Lack of employment is the root cause of crime in society, but I assure you that in the coming months, this initiative will lead to large-scale job creation,” Shalum assured.
