The Students Union Government President of University of Jos, Comrade Sidney Daman has threatened to kick against indiscriminate increase in school fees. The SUG President stated that they will boycott classes over purported hike in school fees charges against the former N27, 400 to the increase benchmark of N45, 000 by management of the university.
Comrade Daman stated this on Friday at the Nigerian Union Journalists ( NUJ ),Plateau State Council ,as the SUG threatened to embark on indefinite strike to shutdown academic activities unless the comply with their demand.
He stressed that; “it is imperative at this juncture for the sleeping dog to speak on some impending issues , he said that the federal government of Nigeria through the national university commission which is a public institution saddle with the responsibility to maintain and regulate federal institution should unify school fees charges in the country.
Daman said, “it is not long ago that the students of University of Jos encountered payment problems in the 2015/2016 academic session, while the repayment saga still lingers and fresh in our minds ,the issue of increments of school charges became a gruesome reality on the, 16th of March, 2017 at the multipurpose auditorium .
According to him, the leadership of the SUG is committed to a dialogue process of seeing that the above mentioned issues come to a reasonable conclusion.
“We have over time, demonstrated fine spirit of our new found ideal and we wish to call on ASUU,SSANU,NASUU and all other responsible union to as a matter of solidarity, join the negotiation process of the students to ensure a peaceful and fair negotiation”, he added.
He called on parents, guardian including stakeholders to wake up and stand with their children on the issue, we encourage the parents who are key player to join the struggle for the sake of posterity.
