Concerned Parents of SS2 Students of Federal Government Girls College FGGC Langtang, has accused the Principal the school, Mrs. Helen Oghenedoro, and another management team of the School of causing the school to witness serious moral and ethical decline that has plagued the academic environment with diverse irregularities which has not to remain the same.

In a petition sent the National Human Rights Commission, Jos, and to the Permanent Secretary, Through the Director Basic and Secondary Education, Federal Ministry of Education, the concerned parents said; “There has been disunity among the staff, students and each other, and parent and the PTA Chairman due to bad leadership of the principal, Mrs. Helen Oghenedoro and her management team, comprising of the VP Academics 1 and 2, the VP Admin, the VP Student affairs, the PTA Chairman, which has placed our children at the receiving end of the backlash.”

  1. The parents said; “These have been recurrent over the years till date, getting worse for our children; for instance: Two parents: DSP Nanloh Rindap and Reuben Musa Mallah on the 18th June, 2019 wrote to the FME and copied your commission, complaining of the needless brutal treatment of their children, who were serving prefects, leading to their deboardment for no just cause. Their contacts: DSP Nanloh Rindap – 08037901432, and Reuben Musa Mallah – 08037222377. They fought as lone rangers without much impact. And this trend has continued unabated till date.

  1. In the same June, 2019, after the same principal and her management team compelled all graduating students to pay a mandatory N2,500 for school magazine, she omitted many students in the magazine for reasons best known to her without refunding them. Among the victims are Kyenpya Heritage Mangvwat, an assistant prefect on uniform. When the parent confronted her and demanded that they make sure she is included or be refunded, the principal just excused it away to printer’s oversight. This is how Kyenpya and other students lost the opportunity to feature with their mates till date. The 2019 magazine is there to testify to these omissions.

  1. The principal and these VPs connived on several instances to maltreat the students by poor and insufficient feeding; and the quantity and the quality of the food were reduced for their selfish interest. They are also involved in giving our children pirated and sub-standard books after charging us parents. Sometimes the books will be given at the end of the term, which becomes useless. This has placed most of the class teachers in bad light as scapegoats to most of the children’s poor academic performances, placing them at the receiving end of the management’s incompetence.

  1. The principal and her management team caused a great division among the students which led to a protest by the SS 2 students on the 6th to 11th August, 2021. And the SS 2 students were forced to run for their lives, leaving the school out of bound while the school gates and the fence were not broken, when the principal mobilized other students against them, threatening to kill them with Kitchen knives, cooking sticks and other dangerous items they could lay their hands upon, while pledging solidarity to the principal, all at the instance of the principal. The principal did not care to look for the missing SS 2 students, nor searched for them, neither did she report to the Police or the parents.

  1. The parents, after about a week of hearing rumours, sent a delegation to meet her and to inquire of the whereabouts of the students; but she told them that she could not account for their whereabouts, totaling about 185 of them.

  1. It was the parents’ initiative, that, not knowing the whereabout of their children, spared no resources to go in search for them for about two weeks using the various available print, electronic and social medias, and coming together to comb the whole state from village to villages town and cities across the three geo-political zones to trace their whereabouts and their welfare, before they could find some; and so many parents of SS 2 were not aware their children were missing. This took a lot of tolls on parents financially and psychologically, and have heightened tension in their hearts, while the principal and her team remain unperturbed. The Sunday Standard of 22nd August was among the newspaper that carried this news on page 35.

The parents whose its Signed on behalf of the concerned Parents include

Iliya Mangvwat, Patrick Moses Ture, Engr. Timloh Rambon, Fidelis Tobias Nimsel, Festus Dashem, Godiya Gotus and Rahila Williams Chiroma said that their prayers are as follows;

  1. Neither we the parents nor our children have any confidence in the principal, Mrs. Helen Oghenedoro, her management team, as well as the PTA chairman any more.

  1. We earnestly call for the immediate transfer of the Principal, Mrs. Helen Oghenedoro.

  1. We earnestly call also for the immediate transfer of some management team like the VP Academics 1, VP academic 2, the VP Admin, the VP Student affairs.

  1. We have requested that the Federal Ministry of Education should compel the PTA chairman to convene a PTA meeting immediately, or the Federal Ministry of Education should take over and convene the meeting if the PTA Chairman fails to call for it immediately.

  1. The principal and her management team should be made to pay for the destruction of our children’s properties, carting away of their uniforms, compound wears, blankets, mosquito nets, mattresses, pillows, bed sheets and so on in the hostels; and all their text and note books and lockers in the classrooms by the supporters of the principal while the SS 2 students went missing.

  1. They have traumatized our children beyond what a human adult being will endure, talk less of innocent teenagers. They should be prosecuted for child violation according to the child right act.

  1. We have prayed that the commission bring the principal and her management team to order. And as it stands now by implication, there will be no SS 3 in the school next term if nothing is done. So also, we pray that the National Human Right Commission discretionarily act as this situation requires in the interest of this children to curtail the incessant gross abuse of our minors.

The Parents of SS 2 Students,

FGGC Langtang,

6th September, 2021.

The National Human Rights Commission,

Rikkos, Jos,

Plateau State.

Sir,

PETITION FOR LOSS OF CONFIDENCE IN THE PRINCIPAL OF FGGC LANGTANG, MRS. HELEN OGHENEDORO AND OTHER PRINCIPAL OFFICERS

We, the parents of the SS2 Students write to you sir, to petition the above-mentioned officers in this school, having lost confidence in their ability to take seriously the safety of our children entrusted to their care, and since their coming on board as the management team of FGGC Langtang, has caused the school to witness serious moral and ethical decline that has plagued the academic environment with diverse irregularities which has not remain the same. There has been disunity among the staff, students and each other, and parent and the PTA Chairman due to bad leadership of the principal, Mrs. Helen Oghenedoro and her management team, comprising of the VP Academics 1 and 2, the VP Admin, the VP Student affairs, the PTA Chairman, which has placed our children at the receiving end of the backlash. These have been recurrent over the years till date, getting worse for our children; for instance:

  1. Two parents: DSP Nanloh Rindap and Reuben Musa Mallah on the 18th June, 2019 wrote to the FME and copied your commission, complaining of the needless brutal treatment of their children, who were serving prefects, leading to their deboardment for no just cause.

  1. The parents, after about a week of hearing rumours, sent a delegation to meet her and to inquired of the whereabouts of the students; but she told them that she could not account for their whereabouts, totaling about 185 of them.

  1. By this reckless and irresponsible conduct of the principal and her management team, the children became vulnerable to the evils and dangers of being kidnapped, raped, and all other forms of terrorism common to our society, as they were placed in harm’s way. This is unfortunately coming at the time that Plateau State was witnessing the state of insecurity leading to the imposition of curfew on parts of the state.

  1. All affected parents came together on 30th August, 2021, spent their scarce resources out of parental concern and travelled a long distance all over the state to meet the principal and the management, but she refused to attend to them or their delegation; she barricaded the school gate using Police and Civil Defense who came in their armoured trucks to deter parents to accessing her to lay their complain. She rather chose to meet with them at the police station after several hours of keeping them waiting, knowing that they have to travel back and reach their destination before the curfew.

  1. After the meeting at the Police area command, convened in the presence of the DPO and the Area Commander, an agreement was reached, after the principal apologized, for parents to return the students so far found, on the 1st September, 2021; and for the principal to make sure that none of their properties in the hostel and the classes were vandalized as rumoured; and that no child found will be victimized anymore; and also, that they will call for an emergency PTA meeting as soon as possible so as to address the myriads of situation being faced, so as to give hope for all parents. This agreement was reached with the PTA chairman in attendance who claimed to be representing us in principle, but was actually taking sides with her in practical. To our dismay, the principal ended only verbalizing an apology for erring in some ways to appease aggrieved parents, but as soon as we left the police station, she did not comply with the agreements afterwards. She was only interested in wooing parents to send their children back so that she would have an opportunity to unleash her preconceived vendetta upon them. Attached to this petition are pictures of the destruction of SS 2 books and lockers in their classes. They refused us to access the Hostels to see the extent of vandalism and looting, which is another sad tale of its own.

  1. Early August, one of the VP Acad by name Mr. Dogara, had been beating and assaulting the SS 2 girls, threatening to waste their academic future in the school so long as he is there, and that nothing would be done to him because he is well-connected. Some students fainted as a result of these bullying and maltreatment; some were made to lie in the hot sun, and some locked in the class without being allowed to urinate when they felt pressed for hours, until they were pushed to the wall and forced themselves to react in expressing no confidence in the principal and the school management.

  1. On the 29th August, 2021, prior to the resumption of the SS 2 students we agreed for the 1st September 2021, the principal had already invited the JSS 3 and SSS 1 students secretly and separately to her official residence in the dead of the night, between 10:30 pm and 11:30 pm, and cajoled them to cause problems, making it look as if they were beaten by the SS 2 students when they return on the 1st September, so as to further cast them in bad light and to smear them. She had forgotten the fact that some SS 2 students have their siblings in the lower classes, and could not stand to see their elder sisters in SS 2 endangered, thereby making them exposed this sinister script and alerted their parents ahead of time. This script became real first on Wednesday night the 1st September when the principal came out around 10:00 pm to relocate them into the dormitory which could not contain them, so as to provoke them to react, and for her to find excuse to accuse them of unruly behaviour; which she didn’t succeed. Then she staged another attempt on Thursday night the 2nd September, 2021, when a JSS 3 student claimed she was beaten by the SS 2 as soon as they all finished eating dinner together, and was purportedly hospitalized. We had earlier, cautioned our children in the presence of the VP Acads, when we brought them back on the 1st September, that they should NEVER respond or retaliate to any provocation from anyone, but should follow due process in everything; we prayed with them and they obeyed.

  1. The principal and her management team kept all the SS 2 students standing at the dormitory on the night of 2nd September, from 9:00 pm till 2:00 am. Others were released to the hostels but about 15 of them spent the night in the dining. A parent resident in Langtang who was called upon witnessed all these treatments meted on them that night.

  1. The principal and her management team brought in police to take these children that are not up to 18 years, and detained them under the guise that they beat the JSS 3 student. They would not treat the case within the college perimeter either by management or disciplinary committee. This is so traumatic and has caused psychological disorder in the mind of the students.

  1. In fulfilment of their earlier threat to destroy the SS 2 students’ academic future, the principal and her management team repeated almost 95% of the SS 2 students the following day on Friday, prior to their departure, since they are in possession of the documents of all the students, thereby adding to their psychological trauma.

  1. The SS 2 students were sent back home; some were given results, while some without their results, except they were informed verbally of their repeating the class again. And the results of most of our children were corrected with correcting fluid, and written on repeatedly with biros, which has never been so in all our children’s results before. The management then proceeded to issuing same results to “some” of the SS 2 students at the school gate, and not at the administrative block as was the custom. While other students were not given any results to know their fate. Attached to this petition also are few copies of some of the results given to the SS 2 Students.
  2. The PTA chairman has never called for congress since he assumed leadership.

  1. He has never called for PTA Exco meeting, but rather chose to run the affairs single-handedly without any shred of accountability, while claiming to represent parents.

  1. The PTA Vice-Chairman died last year; but no information was given to the parents on his demise. We parent only came to hear of his demise recently due to this emerging issues. This gave room for the PTA Chairman to keep misrepresenting and manipulating parents in critical decisions single-handedly with the principal.

  1. The principal and the PTA chairman claimed that PTA meeting was not called due to the Covid-19. This is false, because we suggested for Zoom meeting or WhatsApp page or any alternative for update and information, but to no avail.

  1. The PTA chairman has been sending some students from school arbitrarily, that they have not paid their PTA fees while they have paid. This has caused some parents to pay PTA twice or three times per each term because of lack of proper record, accountability, unfaithfulness and corruption.

OUR PRAYER:

  • The principal and her management team should be made to pay for the destruction of our children’s properties, carting away of their uniforms, compound wears, blankets, mosquito nets, mattresses, pillows, bed sheets and so on in the hostels; and all their text and note books and lockers in the classrooms by the supporters of the principal while the SS 2 students went missing.

  • They have traumatized our children beyond what a human adult being will endure, talk less of innocent teenagers. They should be prosecuted for child violation according to child right act.

  • We have prayed that the commission bring the principal and her management team to order. And as it stands now by implication, there will be no SS 3 in the school next term if nothing is done. So also, we pray that the National Human Right Commission discretionarily act as this situation requires in the interest of this children to curtail the incessant gross abuse of our minors.

CONCLUSION

It is our prayer that the National Human Rights commission will consider our issues positively otherwise we will be like sheep without shepherd, and our children’s academic quest remain in jeopardy. We are optimistic of your leadership quality to do justice to our plights as parents.
