Gunmen Killed 52, Set 300 Houses And Shops Afire In Borno

Over 50 gunmen yesterday overran the Kawuri District of Konduga Local Government Area of Borno state, setting ablaze more than 300 residential Houses and shops after it has also killed many residents.

The incident which took place on Kawuri town around 6pm on Sunday saw gunmen invading the town with AK47 rifles, Improvised Explosive Devices and petrol bombs as they wrecked havoc before fleeing into the sambisa forest.

It was also gathered that 52 persons including a policman lost their lives in the attack with many policemen and civilians injured.

It is also gathered that most of the traders and residents, who sustained injuries are at the moment receiving treatment at Konduga General Hospital and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

Speaking on the incident, Borno State Police Commissioner, Mr. Lawal Tanko also confirmed the attack to newsmen in Maiduguri, said that he has not received the details on the number of fatalities.

He also said; “I received an intelligent information that Kawuri town was attacked by Boko Haram sect suspected to be on a revenge mission on Market day (Sunday), where many civilians were killed while several others were left with serious wounds before they set the whole place on fire; we have deployed our men to the area and very soon I will feed you with details”.

On the number of casualties from the side of his officers and men, Tanko said although some of his men were wounded in the attack, none of them has died.

Adding further the commissioner said with determination to end the violence perpetrated by terrorists in the region, particularly in Bama, Gwoza, Damboa Council areas, the State Command under the recommendation of the Police Service Commission, has promoted the Area Commander of Bama, Mr. David Dangiwa from the rank of Chief Superitendent of Police to Assistant Commissioner of Police, while Officer in-Charge of Operations, Mr. Aminu Koji has moved from Assistant Commissioner to Deputy Commissioner of police, with immediate effect.
