As part of efforts to promote peace and community resilience among conflict affected populations, Green Advocacy for Conflict Prevention and Resilience Building (GACRB) has organized a one-day Sulhu Community Dialogue at Salama Camp in Gerei Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
The event brought together internally displaced persons (IDPs), community leaders, and peace advocates to engage in dialogue focused on reconciliation, peaceful coexistence, and the reintegration of former victims of insurgency.
Speaking at the event, Bashir Tahir Yola , Lead trainer of GACRB Adamawa state encouraged the displaced persons to embrace peace and let go of past grievances, noting that reconciliation is key to rebuilding their lives and communities.
Tahir also appealed for tolerance and acceptance of individuals who have returned from captivity or had experiences with terrorist groups, emphasizing the need to welcome them without stigma or discrimination.
“To move forward, we must be willing to forgive and unite as one people. Those who have returned after being held captive should be embraced and supported as they reintegrate into society,” he stated.
In an emotional response, Yakubu Ibrahim, Musa Muhammed, both IDPs, expressed deep appreciation for GACRB’s initiative and called for greater government intervention.
“Indeed, what we experienced in the past years could only be likened to the end of the world something no one would wish for. But thank God, we survived the devastating events,” he said.
He further appealed to government authorities at all levels to support their return to their ancestral homes, where they can rebuild their livelihoods through farming and small-scale businesses.
“Many of us were once successful farmers and traders before fate brought us here. Life in the camp is tough. People discriminate against us, and we are often called names at the slightest mistake. All we ask for is the assurance of our safety so we can return home and start over,” he added.
The Sulhu Dialogue is part of GACRB’s broader initiative to promote social cohesion, enhance local peace building mechanisms, and build resilience among communities affected by the insurgence in Northeast Nigeria.
