Four operatives of the Borno State Police Command were reportedly killed during a gun duel with Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in the state.
Also, a member of the Hunters Group, Atom Abua, 40, lost his life, while about 20 thatched huts and other property were destroyed in the attack on a border community.
The officers paid the ultimate price while protecting Nganzai and Damasak communities from gunmen attack.
Meanwhile, the Police Commissioner, Naziru Abdulmajid l, said that additional police officers were deployed to protect Nganzai and Damasak, a border community with Niger Republic.
He noted that in both incidents, a combined team of the Police, Military, Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and local hunters responded swiftly and repelled the attackers, preventing further damage to lives and property.
The Command added that the additional deployment of personnel successfully repelled the coordinated terrorists’ attacks in the Borno Central Senatorial District of the state.
Also, spokesperson for the Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nahum Daso, stated: “On April 4, 2026, at about 1:00 a.m., armed terrorists suspected to be members of Boko Haram and ISWAP attacked the Nganzai Divisional Police Headquarters in an attempt to overrun the community located along the Maiduguri-Monguno Road.
“The Police Divisional Officers, in collaboration with Police Mobile Force (PMF) operatives and the state’s crack squad on special duty, engaged the insurgents in a fierce gun-battle that lasted about an hour.”
“The terrorists, in possession of Rocket-Propelled Grenades (RPGs) and other sophisticated weapons, caused damage to a section of the Nganzai Divisional Police Station, and partially torched an unserviceable Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC).”
The Commissioner of Police has, however, deployed additional manpower and operational assets to the affected communities to strengthen security, intensify operations, and prevent further attacks.
The CP commended the bravery and resilience of the officers who confronted the assailants and prevented them from overrunning the Nganzai town.
He also extended condolences to the families of the deceased personnel and assured them that the Command is committed to tracking down the perpetrators and bringing them to justice.
The commissioner further urged the public to remain calm, vigilant, and continue to support security agencies with credible information.
The Command, therefore, reiterated its unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property across the state.
