Prominent human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has urged the Nigerian Police Force to immediately release ASP Makinde Vincent, a Police officer detained at Asokoro Police Station in Abuja since November 11, 2024.
In a statement released on December 16, Falana revealed that he had received a distressing image from a fellow officer showing ASP Makinde with his legs chained while in custody.
Falana condemned the inhumane treatment, asserting that the officer’s prolonged detention without any clear charges or explanation is a gross violation of his rights.
“I call on the Police Authorities to release ASP Makinde Vincent and investigate the circumstances of his dehumanization in police custody,” Falana stated.
The prominent lawyer and activist stressed that shackling a detainee is a form of torture and violates the fundamental human rights enshrined in Nigerian law.
He urged the Nigerian Police Force to maintain the principles of the rule of law and human dignity, regardless of the officer’s alleged offense.
Falana’s call has sparked widespread concern about transparency and accountability in the Nigerian Police Force.
The public now eagerly awaits an official response from the police authorities regarding the reasons for ASP Makinde Vincent’s detention and the justification for his treatment.
