The new management of the Federal University Lafia, in Nasarawa state turned down a request by the state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ to undertake an assessment visit to the institution in the ongoing tour of public and approved tertiary institutions in the embarked upon by the union.
The NUJ had embarked on an assessment tour to all public and approved tertiary institutions operating in the state, with a view to assessing the state of infrastructure and other facilities including academic content in the institutions but apparently afraid that the visit will lead to the exposure of the rots in the University, the management rejected the visit in a letter to the NUJ state council.
In the letter of reply with reference number FUL/VC/IPR/U/30/Vol.3 dated 11th May, 2016 and endorsed by the Head, information and public relations, Chucks Eze-Obia on behalf of the Vice Chancellor said the visit was not approved by the institution.
“I have been directed to inform you that the Vice Chancellor appreciates the interest your esteemed Union has shown in the Federal University Lafia, but however, I regret to inform you that your request to visit the University with a view to carrying out assessment tour of the Institution was not approved by Management at the moment”. The letter read in part.
Comrade Dan Yakubu, The state chairman of the Union while reacting over the respond of the Federal University wondered the reason behind the action of the university authorities and urged the institution to make its doors open to the press if it has no skeleton in its cupboard.

The university’s management has been having running battles with its Academic Staff Union over alleged maladministration and lack of payment of some entitlements owned its members.
