Ahead of President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to Borno State later in the week, members of the State House of Assembly have urged strict adherence to the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC’s) COVID-19 safety protocols.

The lawmakers said it is incumbent on the good people of Borno to ensure the safety of Mr. President, and his entourage, while in the State.

“Let them ensure they strictly comply with the COVID-19 protocols,” they noted. Their admonition is coming against the backdrop of the reported plan by a former Governor of the State, Sen. Ali-Modu Sheriff to return to Maiduguri from Chad to attend President Buhari’s visit.

The President is billed to visit the State tomorrow, to commission some of the 556 projects executed by Borno Governor, Babagana Zulum. Some projects that will be commissioned by Buhari include 74 primary healthcare centres, new Doctors’ Quarters as well as 6,000 resettlement houses for IDPs and refugees in 15 towns.

The lawmakers, in separate interviews, urged the former governor and any other person for that matter who may have travelled out to countries where COVID scare is evident, to show a sense of responsibility by complying with COVID-19 protocol.

They argued that it is worrisome for Sheriff to even contemplate attending the presidential visit instead of proceeding on 7-days self-isolation, during which time he will avoid physical interaction with other members of the public.

One of the lawmakers, disclosed that Sen. Modu Sheriff was not the only prominent Leader that will miss the visitation of President Buhari, noting that Sen. Kashim Shettima had returned to the Country from the United Kingdom. But on arrival, presented himself at the sample collection centre for the repeat PCR test and proceeded for quarantine.
