Nasarawa State Governor, Engineer Abdullahi Sule, has ordered the shutting down of the state assembly following the demise of the member representing Nasarawa Central, Hon. Adamu Suleiman Ibrahim, whose death is linked to coronavirus.

Engineer Sule disclosed this while updating the press on the latest COVID-19 status of the state, at the Presidential Lodge, on Sunday.

The Governor said, the shutting down of the assembly became necessary after the late lawmaker tested positive to COVID-19.

He explained that the death of the lawmaker has further complicated situations in the state because the late lawmaker has been part of all the sittings of the assembly, even as his burial ceremony was attended by most people who knew his status but apparently failed to take precautions.

“I am happy to tell you that all the members of the House of assembly, including the Speaker, have agreed to be isolated. There samples have already being taken and will be forwarded to the NCDC,” the Governor said.

Engineer Sule equally briefed journalists on the measures put in place to trace all those who may have come in contact with the late lawmaker, including his family members and all those who attended his burial ceremony on Friday.

While commending the people of the state for their cooperation during this trying moment, the Governor, however decried the apparent unwillingness on the part of some people to subject themselves to be tested.

“I continue to emphasize that coronavirus is not a dead sentence, we have seen a lot of people that were infected, treated and released.

“I appeal to our people who are returning from high risk places, to come forward to be tested, so they don’t complicate further our situation. By staying away, they are actually adding more risk in Nasarawa State by affecting other people,” he stated.

So far, according to the Governor, Nasarawa has recorded 9 positive cases of COVID-19, including the lawmaker who passed away Thursday night at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Keffi.

He expressed joy that all the eleven contacts linked to the index case, who were already in isolation, have tested negative.

The Governor gave the breakdown of the cases as follows: Three additional positive cases out of the initial 38 samples obtained from the remaining returnees quarantined at the Isa Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic, one positive case from Keffi and another positive case in Lafia.

“From the results, you will notice that Nasarawa State has nine cases, including one death. Because of the lawmakers’ associations and contacts, we have decided we are going to close down the House of Assembly until we trace all his contacts,” he stated.
