Nasarawa State First Lady, Hajiya Silifat Abdullahi Sule says the 21-year prison sentence against Ahmad Yaro over the rape offense of a 3-month-old baby will serve as a strong signal to those who engage in the act.
The first Lady gave the hint when she received a copy of the recent judgment by the State High Court against Ahmad Yaro for the offence he committed about five years ago.
Hajiya Silifat reiterated her commitment towards fighting against gender based violence and other related issues affecting women and children in the State.
It could be recalled that five years ago, precisely in the year 2020, a rare case of the rape of a three-month-old baby girl by a middle-aged man was reported at Adogi community in the outskirts of Lafia Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
Receiving the Judgement from the State Commissioner for Justice, the first Lady, Hajiya Silifat Abdullah Sule, who has been at the forefront to ensure Justice for Rukkaiyat and her parents.
The parents described the 21-year sentence for Ahmadu Yaro as the right punishment for the culprit.
She called on the families of victims of rape to speak out or report to the relevant authorities for proper action.
The state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Issac Danladi explained that the Judgement was obtained efficiently and gave assurance that the ministry will continue to play a pivotal role in the fight against crimes without compromise.
In an interview, the prosecuting council and Director of Public Defender and Gender Based Violence in Nasarawa State Ministry of Justice, Mrs Allu Justina Alkali, who expressed satisfaction with the Judgement, promised to strengthen partnerships with relevant women organisations in tackling issues affecting the rights of women and children in the State.
When Journalists visited the Adogi community to see how Rukkaiyat is faring after the Judgement, and spoke with the mother, Maimuna Aliyu, who pleaded for Government support and assistance from the affluent in protecting Rukkaiyat from stigmatization as she grows up.
She expressed appreciation to the Nasarawa state first lady for the sponsorship of a series of surgeries conducted on the victim, as well as assisting the family all through since the incident.
