The immediate past Deputy Minority Leader of the Imo State House of Assembly, Hon. Clinton Amadi, has defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and emerged as the apex leader of Owerri Municipal APC.

This development unfolded on Thursday, March 5, 2026, during the assembly plenary, amidst controversy surrounding the Imo APC State Congress, although the just concluded exercise recorded huge success.

Reports indicate that the immediate past Imo APC Chairman, Mr. MacDonald Ebere, abruptly left the congress venue after delivering his valedictory speech and exchanging pleasantries with Governor Hope Uzodimma.

Ebere’s decision to leave before the swearing-in of the new Party State Chairman, Chief Austin Onyedebelu, and his executive members, has been criticized as an act of insubordination.

Governor Uzodimma reportedly stayed until the conclusion of the exercise, sparking speculation that he was displeased with Ebere’s premature departure.

Ebere’s exit has been widely condemned as a breach of protocol, with many questioning his commitment to the party’s unity and stability.

The incident has cast a shadow over the APC’s celebrations, with some insiders describing it as a “height of insubordination”.

With Hon. Clinton Amadi’s defection to APC, he is now regarded as the most prominent elected party official in Owerri Municipal, effectively positioning him as the Apex Leader. His emergence is seen as a significant boost to the party’s momentum in the area.
