Benue APC Crisis Deepens As Gov. Alia, Akume Factions Produce Parallel State Executives

The leadership crisis within the All Progressives Congress in Benue State resurfaced on Tuesday as factions loyal to Governor Hyacinth Alia and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, conducted separate state congresses and produced parallel executives.

Supporters of the Akume-backed faction converged on Eunice Resort along Ankpa Road in Makurdi, where they reaffirmed the Austin Agada-led State Working Committee during what was described as a non-elective congress. Party stakeholders in attendance included Senator Titus Zam, former Minister of State for Health, Professor Iyorwuese Hagher, and other prominent figures. The exercise was monitored by a representative of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

In his acceptance speech, Agada thanked supporters for what he termed a peaceful process and pledged loyalty to the party’s leadership. He assured members of the faction’s commitment to party unity and to supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in future electoral contests.

Meanwhile, Governor Alia’s camp held a parallel congress at IBB Square in Makurdi, where Benjamin Omale emerged as state chairman. Omale promised transparent and inclusive leadership, while affirming support for President Tinubu and Governor Alia.

Addressing party faithful, Governor Alia described the congresses as peaceful and credible, urging members to view their election as a call to service. He reiterated his commitment to strengthening the APC in Benue and expressed appreciation to President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima for their support.

The development underscores ongoing divisions within the Benue APC despite repeated calls for unity.
