Adamawa Assembly Approves Gov Fintiri’s Request To Appoint Transition Committees For 21 Adamawa LGAs

The Adamawa State House of Assembly has granted approval to Governor Ahmadu Fintiri to constitute a transition committee for the 21 local government councils of the state.

The approval followed a request letter forwarded to the Assembly by the Governor and presented on the floor of the Assembly on Monday by the Speaker, Aminu Iya Abbas.

The Governor notified the Assembly that the tenure of the local government council chairmen who were sworn in for a two-year term will expire on Wednesday, December 8, and it will be required that they hand over to democratically elected councils on the expiration of their tenure.

The governor noted that such a democratic process of handing over to elected chairmen would not be possible because the election had not taken place.

He said he as the Governor needs to put committees in place pending duly conducted elections.

He explained that the state Independent Electoral Commission (ADSIEC) had earlier communicated that it was not possible to conduct the election because materials for it were not ready.

According to the request letter, ADSIEC had explained that the reusable materials like ballot boxes, duty vests, bags, kits retrieved from the field after the last election were completely vandalized by EndSARS looting.

The letter added that conversion of voting points into polling units and creation of new ones have increased the number of reusable materials and ad-hoc staff, all of which the letter said makes conducting the council election impossible by ADSIEC for now.

After deliberation on the governor’s request by the lawmakers, the Speaker put the motion to a voice vote and was unanimously endorsed by the Assembly, thereby giving the nod for Fintiri to put transition committees in place at the 21 LGAs of the state.
