The American University of Nigeria (AUN), Yola, has received approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to introduce five new postgraduate programmes in Law and Economics, effective from the 2026/2027 academic session.

The approval followed a successful resource assessment by a panel of NUC experts, who confirmed that the university has the required academic personnel, facilities and other resources to run the programmes.

The newly approved courses are Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Economics, Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Economics, Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Law, Master of Laws (LL.M.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Law.

The development expands AUN’s postgraduate offerings and underscores its commitment to advancing research, innovation and high-quality graduate education aimed at addressing national and global challenges.

AUN President, Dr. DeWayne Frazier, described the approval as a major milestone in the university’s graduate education journey, noting that it reflects the steady growth of the School of Graduate Studies and its increasing contribution to research and scholarship.

According to him, the university has recorded significant growth in postgraduate enrolment over the past three years, strengthening its research capacity, academic output and influence within Nigeria and across the region.

He added that the new programmes would meet the rising demand for advanced education in Law and Economics while broadening AUN’s academic impact.

Also speaking, Bolade Agboola, a professor, who’s also the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, said the approval of the Economics programmes builds on the university’s established undergraduate Economics degree. He described the development as an important step in strengthening graduate education in the discipline.

Agboola expressed confidence that AUN’s experienced faculty and modern learning facilities would equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to compete globally. He said the university is well-positioned to produce graduates capable of making meaningful contributions to the field of Economics.

The university said the new programmes will admit their first cohort of students in the 2026/2027 academic session, creating more opportunities for advanced learning, interdisciplinary research and professional development while reinforcing AUN’s position as a leading centre for graduate education in Nigeria.
