The commissioner Water resources, Honorable Dr.Abdulkarim Kana have attributed intermittent activities of vandals as a major constraint to the supply of water in Nasarawa state.
The commissioner disclosed this during a courtesy call by the State Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists; he affirmed that the state government constructed about 1,500 boreholes cut across the nook and cranny.
“Vandals have succeeded in destroying about 600 boreholes” the commissioner said government has put in place a mechanism to protect public utilities from vandalizing.
Dr.Kana buttressed that frantic measures has been taken to endure that people of Nasarawa state have access to potable drinking water.
The commissioner listed some of the nagging challenges to include
Destruction of public utilities which he said the state government would come up with Public Utility Protection Law to nip the unabated vandalization ongoing in the state.
“Vandalization of public utilities like transformers, cables, building on water pipes and electricity cable as well trespassing public land”.
He listed other challenges affecting water supply in the state capital to the blockage of Amba water works, adding that arrangement has been concluded for the dredging of Lafia water scheme.
On the issues of power supply, the commissioner maintained that Mada and Lafia water works has been connected to the national grid, Dr.Kana however opined that the state government is saving colossal amount of money expended on diesel.
The chairman of NUJ Comrade Dogo Shammah commended the commissioner for the total transformation of the ministry.
Saying the press in Nasarawa state would continue to rally round the ministry of water resources by giving prompt coverage.
He also applauded the state governor for extending his olive branch to the press centre which he said now wears new facelift.
