Over 40,000 farmers would be engaged in wheat farming system in Jigawa State.
This was disclosed by the State Coordinator Wheat Miller, Producers and Marketers Association Jigawa State Chapter Alhaji Aliko Isyaku Umar in an interview with our reporter in Dutse.
Aliko said they were able to engage 5000 wheat farmers on their site while the other side for wheat farmers association which is an old association working in the state for years are to engage 15000 farmers across the state.
The coordinator further explained that they face a lot of challenges due to climate change which affected the farming activities last year due to shortage of rainfall.
He thanked the Jigawa state government for providing the farmers with fertilizers and improved seed from Mexico.
He added the provision of farming inputs to the farmers will greatly assist the farmers to improve their activities describing the seed as a high improved variety which if planted in one hectare of land the farmer will harvest eighty bags of wheat
The coordinator explained that the Jigawa state farmers are expected to produce at least 170,000 metric tons of wheat this year, which he said if this happens, the state economy would be improved.
He also challenged the habits of some farmers who annually collect farming input and sell it,the coordinator advises such farmers to desist from such acts because this time around arrangement has been made with all security agencies and bank for proper recovery of what they have given to farmers.
He urged the farmers to utilize what they have received in their farms as failure to obey the order the association is going take legal action against defaulters, assuring that any farmer who collect their loan and refused to pay back would face court action.
Adding that arrangement of good recovery of what they have given to farmers has already been made by the association.
