Three men dressed as female suicide bombers riding on a tricycle Thursday evening killed unspecified number of people and injured several others at Sajeri area of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state which has been the hotbed of Boko Haram’s insurgency.
One of the suicide bombers alighted from the tricycle and ran into a mosque with explosives strapped to her body. He detonated her bomb, killing many in the process.
When sympathisers gathered at the scene, the second bomber detonated his explosive device among them.
However, the third one was not lucky as some courageous youth broke his legs before he could detonate it.
After breaking his legs, people kept a safe distance away from him while he was trying to detonate his bomb.
Eyewitnesses account says when security operatives got to the scene, they were able to identify the suicide bombers as men dressed in female clothes.
Boko Haram has resorted to targeting civilian population after its fighters were said to have been dislodged from areas they occupied in Nigerian territory.
Meanwhile, the military which issued a statement this evening through its spokesman, Col. Sani Usman, that its men were test-firing their weapons for operations efficiency is yet to comment on this latest unfolding development.
