Local Governments Burden Of Over Staff In Nasarawa State Inherited From Successive Governments-Commissioner
- Says The State Will Get Rid Of Ghost Workers Soon
The Nasarawa State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Honorable Aliyu Tijjani has attributed the woos of Local Government in the state to an inherited burden of unconfirmed staff by successive administration, The Commissioner gave the hint during an interview with selected Journalists in his office.
Tijjani irked over workers strength and finance which is serious burden of the third tier of Government, said the bulk of unconfirmed staff of Local Government constitute serious problems militating against the stunted growth and development of Local Government. The Honorable Commissioner affirmed that his office would ensure the total cleansing of the third tier of Government by delisting phantom workers.
“We will constitute a screening committee to verify the authenticity of staff strength as well as checkmate the disappearance of Local Government funds, Grant received from the federation account is not just for the payment of workers alone but also for the purpose of project execution”, he said.
He pointed out that the worst in the area of illegal appointment of staff was Lafia East Development Area, He stated that any staff of the Development Area who is in possession of appointment letter with a heading Lafia East Local Government or any other Development Area is not a genuine staff and should have himself or herself to be blamed for being in possession of fake appointment letter, he added.
“Available record has shown that from inception of Lafia East Development Area it had 100 staff before but as at this moment it has an estimated number of almost 1000 staff”.
While answering question on the outcome of the recent screening and biometric exercise which was marred by complaints following the omissions of over 13,000 workers at the Local Government level, Honorable Aliyu Tijjani explained that the number of Local Government staff necessitated the omission, “That is human being for you, Nobody is above mistake and I assured you that the next round of screening exercise will be far better than the former arrangement”.
” We will ensure that all those that are suppose to retire do so, while for those that died in service, and for the aged we will foist them to go on compulsory retirement and their entitlement paid to them within the shortest time they left service”, Said Honorable Aliyu Tijjani.
The Commissioner declined comment on the financial independent of the third tier of Government.
Mixed reactions has continued to greet series of screening exercise marred by protest by workers from the third tier of Government, The purpose of the state-wide screening exercise has been defeated (death before arrival) reasons being that names of top Local Government functionaries including Director Personnel Management, Cashiers, who has served for barely thirty years in service were delisted as ghost workers.
Since the inception of the led-APC administration in the state workers has undergoes series of screening and data capture but with no fruitful result.
