A soldier of the Nigerian Army has been arrested for allegedly supplying Army uniforms and ammunition to bandits in Zamfara State.
At a press conference on Friday, Bashir Maru, Deputy Chief of Staff to Bello Matawalle, governor of the state, said the military arrested the officer alongside his girlfriend, following community driven-intelligence.
Mohammed Yerima, the army spokesperson, was however not immediately available to comment on the arrest.
Bashir Maru said; “The military recently arrested an army officer and his girlfriend who were engaged in assisting bandits with military uniforms and ammunition in active connivance with other saboteurs. This arrest was only made possible through community-driven intelligence,”
“While the state government awaits the action the military will take on this matter and make an official statement, the development has further proved the position of Governor Bello Mohammed that unless the fight against banditry is cleansed of bad eggs and saboteurs, we may not record the desired success in the fight.
“Let me use this medium to salute the courage and patriotism of the individual who came forward with information that led to the arrest of these traitors. Our gratitude knows no bounds.”
Bashir Maru appealed to journalists and media organizations to always verify their information before going to the press.
He reiterated the determination of the state government to always partner with the media organizations to ensure balance in their report on matters requiring urgent verification.
Bashir Maru said several bandits were killed by the Ruwan Tofa people in defending their community but the media did not report it.
He reassured journalists of the readiness of the state government to always carry everybody along while discharging its responsibility.
It will be recalled that Governor Matawalle, recently said Nigerians would be shocked to know people who were behind the invasion of Government Secondary School Jangebe in Talata Mafara Local Government Area of the state leading to the kidnap of 279 schoolgirls who have all been safely released and reunion with their families.
