The North East Development Commission (NEDC), in collaboration with the Nigeria Association of Nephrology, has marked World Kidney Day in Yola with a strong call for residents to adopt healthier lifestyles to safeguard their kidney health.
The awareness campaign, held at Palluja market, in Yola North Local Government Area, drew a large crowd of traders, residents, and key community stakeholders, underscoring growing public interest in health-related issues.
Speaking at the event, Batulu Isa, a medical doctor and the Acting General Manager of the Humanitarian Department at NEDC, alongside Khalifa M. Lawan, stressed the importance of preventive healthcare in reducing the risk of kidney disease.
They encouraged residents to embrace healthy dietary habits, maintain proper hydration, and avoid the consumption of substances that could harm the kidneys.
In his address, Felix Tangwami, Commissioner for Health and Human Services, represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting public health.
He noted that the state would continue to collaborate with relevant organizations to tackle kidney-related health challenges and enhance the overall wellbeing of citizens.
A key highlight of the event was the provision of free medical screenings for attendees, aimed at promoting early detection and prevention of kidney diseases.
The initiative is part of broader efforts to raise awareness about kidney health and reduce the burden of related illnesses across communities in Adamawa State.
