We Will Suspend 2019 General Election If Threats Of Violence Persists – INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu

The chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu has read riot act to politicians, threatening to suspend the 2019 general polls unless the politicians are ready to abide by the rule of the game and halt their violent threats on the polity.

Yakubu who was reacting to trending video clips in the social media in which politicians where threatening fire and brimstone over their ambitions noted that the development was a source of worry and concern because the safety of the general public was at stake.

The INEC chairman who made the position of his commission known at a briefing by Osun state Resident Electoral Commissioner on the progress and the preparedness of the forthcoming governorship election in the state called on the public to be more vigilant in the wake of such violent threats adding that politicians must be asked to conduct themselves peacefully.

“The electoral Act, specially section 26, empowers the commission to suspend election on account of violence or threat of violence.

“So, we will continue to partner and continue to work with the security agencies as we approach the 2019 general election. Our meetings are going to become more frequent and regular,” he said.
