WAEC Withholds Gombe Results Over Debt

Almost a week after the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) released results for the 2016 West African School Certificate Examination, students of public schools in Gombe State cannot access their results over debt owed the examination council by the state government.

The students trooped to Cyber Cafés to check their result after WAEC announced the release only to find that their result was not released by the exam council.

Our correspondent who went round some cyber cafés in the metropolis encountered students who felt stranded as their counterparts from private schools came out of the cafés celebrating.

The state government had sponsored students of public schools for the examination, but the government did not pay the balance.

When Daily Trust contacted WAEC branch office in Bauchi, a staff who did not want his name in print, confirmed that WAEC withheld the result because of outstanding payment issue with the Gombe state government.

The Commissioner of Education, Hajiya Aishatu MB Ahmad, was said to have travelled to Abuja, but an official of the ministry told Daily Trust that the result would be available before this weekend.
