University Don, Dr Galam Berates How The Quota System Pushed Nigeria Into Hardship And Increasing Debt Burden

Yakubu Busari

A Lecturer with the University of Jos, Member of the Labour Party, LP, Planning & Strategy Committee (PCC), Dr Nanyak Zingfa Galam has berated the use of quota system as a hydra-headed cancer that has destroyed the country by turning a supposedly rich oil-producing nation to a debt ladened nation. He stated that the country at the moment is cursed with a high percentage of religious and ethnic bigots who promote those that have no business occupying sensitive offices to the detriment of the country.

Dr Galam stated this in an exclusive interview in Jos, He stated and I quote “if it was not for quota system, religious and ethnic bigotry in Nigeria, Nigeria would have been the cynosure of all eyes and veritable giant of Africa”. He described the attitude of many Nigerians as that of not caring about what happen as long as my tribe or religious person is the president of the country and would grant me access to pilfer the already depleted collective wealth of the Nation. He said they also see it as a license to conduct themselves with impunity in all spheres of governance and in their daily activities. This is not the case in other climes where you have powerful institutions and respect for the rule of law. He further stated that if institutions were strengthened and due respect was given to the rule of law, no one would care if the president was a Christian, Muslim, or even a Pagan.

“We elect leaders based on sentiment and the result is what we are witnessing in Nigeria today.”

We need to change the narrative. That is the more reason we need Peter Obi as President; we have experienced the PDP and APC’s style of governance and have lost confidence in their ability to restore Nigeria’s lost glory. “We have the most credible presidential candidate who has proven beyond reasonable doubt that apart from having the mental capacity to govern Nigeria, he is still young and can cross the length and breadth of this country to ensure security, turn the economic wheel of the country to enable it achieve its optimum potential.”

According to him, Peter Obi is not a new person to anyone but a young, vibrant personality who will transform the country in all the sectors if given the mandate. He would bring us out of the present financial mess. Fortunately, he is coming from a political party that has enormous respect for the smallest unit of society, thus its symbol the family, Nigeria, would be one big happy family with Peter Obi as president, he stated.“He is a known trader, investor, a friend to everybody, and he is a man that can deliver Nigeria from avarice, recklessness and self-aggrandizing attitude of leaders that has continuously bedeviled the country.”

As a politician today, Mr Peter Obi has shown capacity by prudently managing the resources of Anambra state, saving and investing money on behalf of the state, thus whilst some of his counterparts were regular visitors to the anti-corruption agencies he received praises and recognition for his sterling performance within and outside the shores of this country. As a governor, we saw for the very first time someone who was faithful with his state, converting it from a predominantly consuming state to a producing one, providing evidence that he would change Nigeria from the concept of consumption to production. He was faithful with little, thus he can be trusted with much. That is the governance we are talking about, not the business as usual kind.

“He disclosed that the coming of LP presidential candidate has changed the dynamics of politicking from vote buying, regionalism, ethnicity and religion to politics of credibility and capacity to provide the much needed dividends of democracy.Nanyak Galam says, “why I’m saying this is not that he (Peter Obi) is coming to perform a miracle in governance but he would put Nigeria back on the track of economic recovery, security and inclusive governance, Note that Peter Obi has continually buttressed the point that Nigerians would run for the office of President through him.

“He stated that when the economy witnessed appreciable growths in GDP was during Former President Obasanjo, to Yar,Adua and Goodluck Jonathan and we have this belief that when Peter Obi comes on board, we would see greater growth in the economic indices that would translate to what the trader, drivers and the average person on the street can attest to.Dr Nanyak Galam reiterated that the coming of Peter Obi apart from strengthening internal democracy within our political parties, changing the narrative from money bag politics, and ensuring justice, equity and fair play, it would also remove the Stockholm Syndrome toga attributed to Nigerians who continuously vote for those that oppress them and keep them in a state of mental and physical slavery. Political parties would learn to put their best foot forward rather than bringing the richest money bag, regardless of the source of his/her wealth. He drummed support for Peter Obi and LP emphasizing that the LP has the best candidate applying for the post of president and urged all and sundry to give the party a chance to prove to them how it can build a productive society that would make our families (Mama, Papa and Pikin) smile again.
