T.Y Danjuma, Professor Falola, Others Bag Unijos Doctorate Degrees

The former Chief of Army Staff, General Theophilus Danjuma  as well as Professor Toyi Falola and Dr David Victor Oteraru-Olagbegi  have received honorary  doctorates  degrees from the University of Jos .

The vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Professor Hayward Babale  Mafuyai said, T.Y Danjuma bagged honorary doctorate degree of science  while Prof. Toyi Falola bagged doctorate of letters and Dr David Victor Otetaru-Olagbegi was given doctorate of law .

He disclosed that   29 students graduated with distinctions, 1548 with first class, 1548 second class upper bracket, 7860 in second class lower division, 2750 third class and 520 with pass division.

Briefing Journalists at the Senate Chamber of University of Jos, he said the university was established in 1971 as Jos campus of the University of Ibadan which Professor Emmanuel Ayandele was appointed acting principal in the present township along Murtala Mohammed way and started with pre-degree and degree courses in the arts .

According to him, a total 16,543 with 164 being awarded doctorate degrees, 937 bagged masters degree, 197 postgraduate diplomas, and 13030 are graduating with first degree and 2091 diplomas while 48 will receive certificates.

Professor Mafuyai revealed the 40th anniversary celebration and convocation ceremony of the University of Jos will hold on 27th & 28th of September, 2015.

He said, from four faculties structure with 700 students ,the University has grown to twelve faculties namely Agriculture, Arts ,Education, Engineering Environmental sciences, Law ,Management sciences ,Medical sciences,  Natural Sciences ,Parmaceutical sciences , Social sciences and Veterinary medicine, he also said that currently the university has 78 academic programs across 86 Academic departments ,students enrolment stands at 29,403 full time part-time and postgraduate students respectively.

Mafuyai emphasized that University of Jos is providing high quality teaching as it also linked with high research in Africa with excellence for phyto-medicine development through World Bank grant.

He added that one Helon Habila won the Caine prize and the Commonwealth literature prize in succession.
