Sen Gyang Decries How The Hospitality Of Beroms Was Tested By Foreigners On Land Grabbing

The Chairman, Nzem Berom 2023 main planning committee, Senator Istifanus Dung Gyang has said , the rural economy must upgrade to mechanized farming, animal husbandry, poultry, piggery, and fish farming, in Plateau state as the hospitable and peace-loving nature of the Berom has been severely tested and overstretched, and the rural economy dislocated, yet, our commitment to peace and peacebuilding remains unshaken.

He made this disclosure at the 2023 Nzem Berom Day celebration to usher in the new farming season at Rwang Pam Stadium ,Jos.

According to him,”Nzem Berom 2023 has a focus on the Berom Economy hence the Theme, “The Berom Economy, a Metamorphosis.” This is apt because the economy of any people defines and determines their relevance, influence, impact, and indeed, the respect they are accorded.

“The Berom economy has undergone phases and stages of metamorphosis from the pre-colonial era which was largely rudimentary and characterized by farming, hunting, husbandry, smelting, etc, to the Colonial era which introduced Mining activities and the market cash economy, and then the ‘post-Colonial modern-day economy,” he stated.

Senator Gyang emphasized and discuss the scope, content, and contribution of the Berom economy to the GDP of the nation and her rating in the productivity index of the Nigerian economic value chain was thought-provoking and exposed the need for the Berom to step up and rise to the challenge.

“We are expectant that the impact of this year’s Nzem Berom will mark an economic tum around as the people respond to the need to translate prospects and potentials into viable and visible economic activities and ventures.

The intent is to awaken and cause to arise an enterprising generation and people that will become active participants and players in the marketplace of skilled artisans, traders, shop owners, masons, plumbers, mechanics, and so on”. He added.

 Gyang disclosed that the necessary posture and training that will make for our active participation in the modern knowledge-driven Digital Economy which has been branded as the Fourth Industrial Revolution requires that We invest in Education and Human Capital Development with an emphasis on Technology.

It is in this wise that the establishment of the BEROM TRUST FUND by His Majesty the Gbong Gwom is timely and welcome so as to gain the capacity to codify an Economic Blue Print for the land and translate it into reality, he said.

I.D.Gyang noted that another dimension of the Berom Economy is the fact that the community plays host to many of the choicest Tourism sites in the state. Developing those sites is an opening to the private sector to invest while the government provides basic services and access roads.

 This will have a direct impact on the host communities and the economy of the state at large.

We are aware that the Berom Economy cannot thrive in isolation, being part of the larger Nigerian socio-economic milieu and the challenges therein

Sen.Gyang stressed that building sustainable peace and enforcement of law and order are very necessary for restoring the economic fortunes of the Berom people and indeed all citizens in the land We are therefore hopeful that the new dispensation of government and governance. May, 2023 at both the state and federal levels will effectively address the insecurity that has plagued us.
