Nasarawa State governor,Umaru Tanko Al-Makura says he inherited the education sector in a deplorable conditions when he assumed office on May,29 ,2011.

The state Deputy governor who represents the State governor maintained that the education sector was marred by ineffective and deficient teachers compounded with infrastructural decay.

He stated this while declaring open this year’s national conference of State Universal Basic Education Board in Lafia recently.

Silas Agara says primary and Junior Secondary education which was meant to redirect education for optimum result were in a sorry conditions.

He affirmed that the poor conditions of government schools compounded with  the harsh and unfavourable situation foist the State government to declared State of Emergency on the eduction sector.

Describing the holistic effort of the State government in revamping the educational system as an industrial revolution.

Other achievements recorded ,according to Silas Agara was the settlement of counterpart funds of 2011,2012,2013,2014,2015 to the tune of N4.3bn

He in addition said the counterpart fund accessed by NSUBEB translated to the construction and renovation of classrooms, perimeter fencing as part of security measures as well drilling of boreholes.

The Deputy governor also revealed that the declaration of free Primary and Secondary education created an enabling environment for teachers in public schools.

Governor Al-Makura opined that the declaration of free Primary  and Secondary education was part of the State government inclusive governance given room to the establishment of Comprehensive Special School which was commissioned by President Muhammadu Buhari.

“The inculcation of the physically Challenge persons and the special schools projects was introduced  for the physically challenged to discover their potentials.

He however maintained that the State government in a bid to rejuvenate Primary and Secondary education has introduced ” School Based Management Committee (SBMC) comprises of Paramount rulers ,Parent Teacher’s Association, Youth and Women to add value to the system.

He added that the State government has taken a bold step to tackle security challenges in public Primary and Secondary Schools by deploying Security Operatives to Schools.

“The State government is also building perimeter fences aimed at addressing security challenges, he added.

The Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission ,Dr.Hamid Bobboyi described the Nasarawa State Universal Education Board as one of the richest in the country.

He commended the State government for providing office Zonal office to Universal Basic Education Commission.

The Executive Secretary opined that the commissioning of Comprehensive Special school was part of the laudable commitment and determination in ensuring qualitative Basic education delivery.

He says the meeting with the theme” Agriculture in Basic Education: Preparing The Next Generation of Nigeria’s Agro-Entrepreneurs” is coming at a time when the country is intensifying her effort to diversify the economy.

Affirming that Agriculture has a critical role to play not only in ensuring national food security but also in providing a solid and sustainable basis for the transformation of the economy.

Bobboyi described Basic education as the bedrock of our educational system and the foundation we require to build a purposeful ,dynamic and prosperous nation.

The Executive chairman, Dan’azumi Muhammed commended the State governor, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura for the prompt released of funds to enabled NSUBEB to provide an enabling environment to implement SUBEB policies and programmmes

The chairman said effort was on topgear to employ 2500 teachers ,he affirmed that the intention was to meet the UNICEF convention on teachers/pupils ratio for effective teaching and learning.

Dan’azumi said the provision of needed facilities in public schools are meant to inculcate,good moral values that will shape the thinking of pupils and students.

Adding that it will make them educational sound and economically productive with the provision of necessary tools and good working condition of service with a view to raising their standards and accord them their right place as the conscience of the society.
