POWA Calls For Urgent Action On Gender Equality

The Police Officer Wives Association (POWA) has called for urgent action on gender equality to drive the nation’s socio-economic transformation.

POWA Chairperson for Lagos State, Mrs Risqat Jimoh, made the call on Saturday in Ikeja. The event celebrated the 2025 International Women’s Day (IWD) under the theme: ‘Accelerate Action.’

The celebration began with a road walk led by Mrs Jimoh, wife of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police.

It proceeded around Ikeja and returned to the POWA secretariat for an indoor session with guest speakers, including health professionals.

Pupils from Police Children’s School, Ikeja, participated in the event. They received valuable counselling on healthy living and moral values.

Jimoh acknowledged the vital role of women in nation-building. “I urge women, especially police wives, not to rest but continue being resourceful to fulfil your potential,” she said.

The IWD, celebrated on March 8 every year, raises awareness and encourages action on gender inequality. “It’s a day to honour women globally,” she added.

According to her, the theme calls not only for reflection on progress but also for faster action towards gender equality, empowerment, and justice.

Jimoh highlighted how women have fought tirelessly for decades to break barriers, challenge stereotypes, and claim their rightful places in society.

“We’ve made remarkable progress, but the journey is far from over.

“Today, we gathered pupils from Police School to educate them on health and encourage them to make deliberate decisions in life,” she said.
