According to him, the partnership between the Press and the Bar is a historically unbroken one that we intend to oil and pass to generations yet unborn in the way and manner it was oiled and passed to us.
The Nigerian Bar Association, Jos Branch, in carrying out one of its aims and objectives set the 2023 Law Week Committee chaired by Niri Darong, Esq , for the Law Week which has as its theme “Law and Policy; A. Chequered Odyssey”.
Since politicians pass the law, a political scientist of’no mean repute in the person of Prof. Chris Kwa’ is the Keynote Speaker , we are blessed with this erudite scholar of distinctive abilities, dogged spirited, humble and simplistic in character and disposition who is not just an academic but he has inestimable experience in public administration, governance and community service both locally and internationally,he said .
He is poised to x-ray this theme of LAW AND POLICY: A CHEQURED ODYSSEY.
The Chairman of the Law Week is Major General Nuhu Angbazo (rtd.), one of the people who have been involved in law and policy in our security sector.
Having risen through the ranks to become not just a General Officer Commanding but also Chief of Civil Military Relations as well as Chief of Training and Operations of the Nigerian Army, we will not lack what to take from the General ,he explained.
The Governor of Plateau State who is also the Ambassador of the Nigerian Bar Association is the Special Guest of Honour and will formally declare the Law Week open on Monday, 4″ December, 2023.
While there are a lot of Activities marking Law Week which is a period when Legal Practitioners come together and evaluate their work in the previous year and set new agendas for the future of the profession, the content of the program includes the watershed of functional learning that earned the practitioner minimum credit units to continue and remain relevant in the practice of the law whether in employed position or in private practice. It is also a period to engage with relevant constituted authorities involved in the administration of justice by building virile partnerships for national development through observance of the rule of law. It also allows Colleagues to interact without the usual Courtroom arguments, It encourages and fosters deepening relationships that result in synergy in some areas of practice.
It affords the practitioner the time to unwind from strict formalities by socializing such as dancing and playing some sports or games.
It helps the younger practitioners to meet the very old practitioners that
they admire in Court and are looking forward to becoming like them. This Law Week is no exception. It is loaded in content to add to our knowledge, law dinner.
The theme for this year’s Law Week resonates with the contemporary times. As legal practitioners, the jurisprudential definition of law is inherent as a result of the training of the lawyer.
Policy on the other hand is principally in the realm of public administration. Nevertheless, it is a concept that is also relevant in private business.
In simplistic terms, the policy is seen as ‘a plan of what to do in particular situations that has been agreed to officially by a group of people, a business organization, a government, or a political party. Apparently, from this definition, notwithstanding that policy dwells more in the firmament of public administration.
Yet, as legal practitioners, our law offices will be functional and effective where they are predicated upon the twin pillars of law and policy.
Other stakeholders in the justice sector administration such as the Judiciary, Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police, Department of State Security, the Nigeria Correctional Service, etc. will be functional if there is a practical interplay between law and policy other words that connote the same meaning as policy are strategy, plans, blueprint, scheme, etc.
Because we want to have an impact on specific problems bedeviling Plateau State, we shall be having breakout sessions where the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), the Human Rights Committee of the Branch as well and the Young Lawyers Forum of the Branch will be discussing key areas of the large.
