Plateau Local Government Election To Hold October 10th In 13 LGAs

The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission, PLASIEC has announced that Local Government Council Election is scheduled to hold on the 10th October 2018 in 13 Local Government Areas of Plateau State.

 

The Chairman, in a press briefing, promised that the communication was for him to explained the reason for the new date for the conduct of local government elections in the state to Journalists.

 

The PLSIEC Chairman Fabian Ntung on Tuesday shortly after his close door meeting with heads of Political parties at the commission’s Headquarters in Jos.

 

“It would be recalled that the All Progressive s Congress, APC Leadership Plateau, headed by Governor Simon Bako Lalong came on board in 2015, local government elections remains a mirage, due to alleged security threats on the conduct of the exercise”.

 

However, PLSIEC Chairman fixed the conduct of the election that never saw the light of the day on February 17th, 2017 leaving suspicion in the mind of political pundits and condemnation across the state.

 

Our correspondent gathered that with this fresh move, the chairman revealed that four out of the 17 local governments will not witness democratic process due to the security reports filtering the air that they are not safe for the exercise.

 

The following LGAs which might not experience voting including; Jos North, Barkin Ladi, Riyom and Jos South that would be exempted from participating actively in the exercise due to the current security situation in the areas.

 

saying that it is with the conviction that in no distance figure, it will obtain security clearance to conduct elections in the affected local government when much security would have been concentrated on the area.

 

He mentioned areas where the election will take place in October however, to include, Bassa, Bokkos, Jos East, Kanam, Kanke, Langtang North, Langtang South Mangu, Mikang, Pankshin, Qua:an-pan, Shendam, and Wase.

 

The Commission had earlier cleared 725 Candidates to contest for Chairmanship and Councillorship from different political parties to contest the elections in the seventeenth local governments in the state.

 

Ntung disclosed that at T the year ended 2017, 2, 145,507 voters were eligible and would liaise with INEC to update the list, adding that nonsensitive materials will in no distance future be transferred to local government PLASIEC offices in the state, in addition to the recruitment of ad-hoc staff.

 

He assured the stakeholder in their electoral process of free, fair and transparent elections.

 

Responding, the All Progressive Congress Chairman, Lateb Dabang confirmed that the shift in date became mandatory because of the security reports available to them as stakeholders in Plateau state.

 

He urged PLASIEC to conduct free and fair election devote of any rancor by calling on all politicians to be law-abiding citizens not to allow their personal ambition to truncate the Democratic tenets.

 

Dabang maintained that the state is among the peaceful states in the country so we should work towards remaining as the most peaceful states.

 

He disclosed that the APC is prepared for the forthcoming LG poll, by advising the government to categories the number of local governments to be free for the conduct of the election.
