Oyo CAN Orders Churches To Tighten Security, Suspends Late Activities

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Oyo state chapter, has directed churches across the state to strengthen security measures in response to the growing cases of abduction and kidnapping.

 

The directive was contained in a communiqué issued after a meeting of the association and signed by Rev. Elisha Ogundiya, its chairman and  Very Rev. Samuel Owolabi, the secretary.

 

According to the communiqué, churches have been advised to suspend late-night physical activities and take proactive steps to protect worshippers and church property.

 

“Due to incessant abductions and kidnappings in recent times, Oyo CAN advises churches to be more security-conscious by strategically positioning security personnel and electronic devices within their premises and neighbourhoods,” the statement said.

 

The association also urged churches to intensify prayers for victims currently in captivity and prioritise fencing and gating of church premises where such infrastructure is lacking.

 

CAN further directed church leaders to engage trained security personnel, particularly during worship services, and conduct security assessments of guards and other essential workers within their establishments.

 

The body warned churches against allowing strangers to sleep within church auditoriums or premises, stressing the need for increased vigilance.

 

It also advised residents to limit unnecessary travel and avoid late-night journeys amid the prevailing security challenges.

 

The association reiterated support for the state government’s directive restricting commercial motorcycle operations after 10:30 p.m., describing it as part of efforts to improve security.

 

 

While expressing concern over the rising wave of kidnappings, CAN commended the Oyo State and Federal Governments for ongoing efforts to secure the release of abducted victims, particularly those kidnapped in Orire Local Government Area.

 

The association called on authorities to intensify rescue efforts and ensure abductees are reunited with their families as quickly as possible.

 

CAN pledged continued collaboration with government and security agencies to promote peace, unity and stability across Oyo State.
