Over 80% Of Teachers In Nasarawa Are Incompetent-Governor Al-Makura

Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa state has declared that 80 percent of teachers in the state are incompetent to teach.

He stated this in College of Education Akwanga during the flag-up ceremony of the review of the minimum standard of the National Certificate of Education.

The governor said if teachers are to be subjected to competency test like it happened in Kaduna over 80 percent would be sack.

The state Commissioner of Education ,Honorable Aliyu Tijjani Ahmed said vast of the teachers going by available records shows that most Primary and Secondary School teachers are not qualify.

The Governor acknowledge that the state government is not planning to conduct aptitude test for teachers in Primary and Secondary schools would rather embark on training and retraining for better results.

He in addition disclosed that the essence of the test was meant to build their capacities for better service delivery.

Appealing to the National Commission for Colleges of Education and other critical stakeholders to step-up supervision in order to save the sector from collapsing

He urged that more priority be given to technical education and entrepreneurship in the review of curriculum so as to make the graduates of Colleges of Education employers of labour.

The Executive Secretary of National Commissions for Colleges of Education, Professor Bappah Aliyu, said the conference which had in attendance all Provosts of Colleges of Education, lecturers and other stakeholders was aimed at reviewing the minimum standard of NCE.

Adding that the standard which was supposed to be review after five years was last review in 2012 hence the need for all critical stakeholders to overhaul it for better output.

The Executive Secretary said inputs are expected from all stakeholders including teachers in order to reposition Colleges of Education to produce more qualify teachers across the country.

The host Provost, Rebecca Umaru expressed gratitude for having such a national event taken place in the College.

He prayed that the outcome of the conference would go a long way to keeping lecturers and the managements on the feet to ensure strict adherence to standard.

The programme which would last for two-days was attended by Provosts and lecturers from all Federal, States and Private colleges of education in the country.
