The National Union of Road Transport Workers, Plateau State Council Chairman, Alh Yusha’u Muhammad Dan-iyan mun and the Sardaunan Gabas had advocated for free distribution of speed limit devices and rehabilitation of major roads to meet up the international standard to curtain accidents on highways.
Addressing a stakeholders’ meeting at the state Secretariat in Dadin Kowa Jos South Local Government Area on Tuesday, Muhammad disclosed that the meeting in session noted with dismay the untold hardship being inflicted on their members by the FRSC in its effort to enforce the installation of the speed limit device on commercial vehicles.
According to him, CWC/NEC have decried that the speed limit device cannot eradicate road traffic accident in the country as over 60% of road traffic and not over speeding, atypical example is the mokwa ,Jebba road among others.
He therefore, appealed to the FRSC to as a matter of urgent national important jettisoned the enforcement of installation of the speed limit device.
Muhammad further complained that taking into consideration, the economic recession in the country and couple with the dilapidated condition of most of the nation highway, he advised the FRSC to instead adopt spider technology which has many advantages and of international standard.
He commended the minister of agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbe for bringing to the front burner, the nefarious activities of states and local government revenue Agents who are extorting money from commercial vehicles operator who are mainly members of the Union thereby contributing to high cost of foodstuffs in the country.
The chairman also lauded the national Secretariat of the Union for constituting a committee to liaise with other stakeholders known as “stakeholders forum ” with the mandate to check mate the excesses of the said state and local government revenue agent who are in the habit of mounting road block along public highway’s for purpose of extorting unsuspecting members of the Union.
Muhammad pledged support to APC government both in the state and national by appealing to Governor Simon Bako Lalong to construct road network from Lamba district of Wase Local Government Area linking Busari ,Jarmai to ease transportation of goods .
He said, the road if constructed it would boost movement of goods because the communities along the areas are agrarian communities which sources income are through farming and animals rearing.
