Notorious Bandit Commander Battijo Killed By Nigerian Troops

Nigerian troops have neutralised Kachalla Ibrahim Battijo, a notorious bandit leader during a swift security operation that foiled an attempted mass abduction of students writing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Kogi state.

The incident occurred in Iluke community, Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area, where armed bandits invaded the area and targeted a secondary school examination centre.

During the attack, the gunmen reportedly killed a school vice principal, a child, and another resident, sparking panic in the community as fears grew that students would be abducted into nearby forests.

Security sources said troops of the Nigerian Army’s 12 Brigade, supported by local vigilantes and hunters, quickly responded after receiving distress calls. A fierce gun battle ensued, forcing the attackers to abandon their mission.

In the confrontation, security forces reportedly killed Battijo, who was described as a key bandit commander linked to multiple kidnapping operations across parts of the North Central and North West regions. More than 15 members of his gang were also said to have been neutralised, while others escaped with injuries.

Military authorities recovered the body of the slain commander for identification and intelligence gathering as operations continue to track fleeing members of the criminal network.

The timely intervention ensured the safety of the students, who were later relocated to a secure environment to continue their examinations without further disruption.

Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, described the development as a significant breakthrough in the fight against insecurity in the state, praising the collaboration between security agencies, vigilantes, and local residents.

He assured that ongoing operations would continue until remaining criminal elements were completely dismantled.

Nuhu Ribadu, the national security adviser was also briefed on the operation, with officials noting that Battijo’s death represents a major setback for armed gangs operating in the region.

Security agencies have since intensified surveillance and manhunt operations to apprehend fleeing suspects and strengthen protection around vulnerable communities and schools.
