Yakubu Busari
The Northern Nigeria Human Rights Advocates (NONIRHA) are deeply saddened and outraged by the recent attacks and killings in Plateau, Benue and Borno States which have resulted in the loss of innocent lives and immense suffering.
Signed,
The Coordinator Northern Nigeria Human Rights Advocates (NONIRHA), Sylvester Yibis in a press statement made available to this medium in Jos.
He said, these senseless acts of violence are unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the victims, and we wish a speedy recovery to those injured.
We also commend the resilience and courage of the affected communities, who have shown remarkable strength in the face of adversity.
However, these incidents highlight the urgent need for the government to take concrete actions to address the underlying issues driving these conflicts. To this end, we call on the government to:
1. Conduct a thorough investigation into the attacks and ensure that those responsible are held accountable for their actions.
2. Implement transitional justice mechanisms to address the historical grievances and injustices that have contributed to these conflicts. This should include:
• Establishing truth-telling commissions to uncover the facts surrounding these incidents and provide a platform for victims to share their experiences.
• Providing reparations to victims and their families to acknowledge their suffering and support their recovery.
• Supporting community-led reconciliation initiatives to promote healing and rebuild trust between communities.
3. Take proactive measures to prevent further violence, including:
• Deploying security personnel to affected areas to protect civilians and prevent further attacks.
• Engaging with community leaders and stakeholders to promote dialogue and understanding.
Addressing the root causes of these conflicts, including poverty, inequality, and social injustice.
We urge the government to prioritize the safety and well-being of all citizens and work towards building a more just and peaceful society.
We also call on all stakeholders, including community leaders, civil society organizations, and international partners, to support these efforts and work together towards a brighter future for all.
