Worried by the purported zoning arrangements of the All Progressive Congress (APC) for key leadership positions of both chambers of the National Assembly, Senator Bukka Abba Ibrahim has said that the North Eastern zone of the country which he held from has since independence being marginalized.
Speaking to journalists in his office Abuja, argued that the zone deserves to produce the Senate President noting that the highest post the North East has ever held since independence, was the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representative.
Sen. Ibrahim, who is currently the Chairman Senate Committee on Housing, warned that zoning either the Senate President or Speaker of the House of Representative to other zones outside the North East would amount to ‘initial great error’ by the APC led government-in-waiting.
“We have been marginalized. We need consideration because our zone is the most impoverished in the country, therefore, the imbalance and neglect of the past must be corrected”, argued further.
He said “If our party (APC) fails to allow the North East to produce either the Senate President or the Speaker, it will mean that we have taken a wrong step. The first APC’s step taken is wrong.
The North Central has produced the Senate President for the fifth time, much more than any zone in the country.”
“I don’t understand why the party wants to zone the position of the Senate President to the same zone that has been holding that post for several years,” the Sen. queried.
He advised the APC to review its decision saying that leadership of the National Assembly could be determined by the members of the both chambers.
However, the Senator disclosed that he has no interest in becoming the Senate President adding that all he was demanding for was justice for his political zone.
He also advised the incoming government to as a matter of national importance, declared free and compulsory education in Nigeria to enable every citizen to achieved education.
