President Muhammadu Buhari has described as worrisome that no Nigerian University is quoted among the top 100 Universities in the world.

Buhari made the revelation in Bauchi at the combined 19th, 20th, 21st and 22nd convocation ceremony of the Abubalar Tafawa-Balewa University, Bauchi.

“We rank below a thousand. If we do not aspire to be among the world class Universities, we cannot boast of robust system capable of launching the country among the top economies of the world” said the President.

Buhari who was represented by the executive secretary, National University Commission Professor Julius Okojie regretted that our abundant talents fails at home and excel abroad.

Buhari lamented that incessant strike action is now a major impediment and described it as a bottle neck to the progress of University system saying that teachers’ demands are very germane.

The Federal government intention to address the decay in the education system according to the President is not in doubt a collective resolve to perpetually address the challenges.

“We expect you to come to us with meaningful suggestions as to the way forward through exchange of views and ideas that will assist in arriving at mutually acceptable solutions in education sector,” added Buhari.

Among the constraints bedevilling our Universities Buhari stressed are cultism, examination malpractice and sexual harassment even as he urged students to imbibe the culture of self discipline and decorum in our institutions.
