A Non Governmental Organization, Development Dynamics has frown at the government of Nigeria for its unenthusiastic attitude towards the commencement of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR).

The NGO in a statement signed by its Program Director, Mr. Jude Ohanele, made available to Universalreporters.info, said; “it wishes to remind the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria of its obligation under the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) mechanism of the United Nations (UN).”

Speaking further, Development Dynamics said; “Nigeria is due for 2nd cycle review of its human rights performance under the UPR mechanism in October 2013. It is disturbing that till date, and just few weeks to the said review, the Government of Nigeria has not commenced any visible public activity in preparation for the review, despite its commitment to do same.”

“It is the considered view of Development Dynamics that the Government of Nigeria has not shown adequate political will in implementing its voluntary commitments as a party to the UPR mechanism. This is a strong evidence of the low priority that the Government of Nigeria attaches to human rights issues.”

Meanwhile the NGO said that it is calling on Government of Nigeria and its agencies especially the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Justice among others, to take urgent steps to commence public activities in preparation for the review of Nigeria under the UPR mechanism in October 2013 as it said time is running out.
