Nasarawa Polytechnic Boils Again As Students Shutdown School Over Non-accreditation Of Courses

  • Says School Extorted N2000 For Accreditation From Students Amounting To N19 Million

Students of the Nasarawa State Polytechnic Lafia took to the street protesting non-accreditation of courses despite the intervention of the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Education, Abdullahi Agwai and the Public Relations Officer of the Institution, Muktar Wakeel.

The students were seen at the entrance to the school carrying placards with inscriptions “WE ARE TIRED OF STORIES ” “NO ACCREDITATION, NO SCHOOL ” ” SINCE 2013 NO ACCREDITATION “.

The leader of the protesting the students, Umar Abdullahi, who is the current Financial Secretary of National Association of Nigeria Students, Nasarawa State Polytechnic chapter in a statement signed made available to Journalists said students to would vehemently resist any attempt to disrupt the peaceful protest.

The Spokesperson demanded that the management of the institution and the state government should do the needful by ensuring that former graduates of the institution were mobilized to service before the end of August 2018.

Other demands of the students also include all Departments must be accredited by with immediate effect.

They demanded that no academic acts should take place until their demands are met.

“We will resist vehemently any attempt to stop the angry students”, calling on the State government to dissolve the management staff for lack of experience and incompetence and be replaced with people of proving integrity.

The protesters who were not satisfied with the outcome of the thirty minutes marathon meeting with the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Education did not listen to the explanation of Umar Abdullahi, instead moved to Government House along Shendam road with placards.

The protest was quelled by the timely intervention of the State Deputy governor, Silas Agara.

The Permanent Secretary in an exclusive interview with selected Journalists at the boardroom of the institution said the State government is on top of the situation.

At the time of filing this report, the Acting Rector, Augustine Ali Gabu when contact on phone for explaining on the effort of the state government says is at Nasarawa Polytechnic attending to processes of accreditation, he declined to comment over the N19, 000,000 collected from students for accreditation of courses.

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic leadership confirmed that the N13, 000,000m collected from students by the former headship, Silas Gyar was missing.

It was authoritatively gathered that Ali Gabu collected a whopping N6, 000,000m without approval by the State government.

Nasarawa State Polytechnic, Lafia was established by the erstwhile governor, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu in 2001, it would be recalled that all the existing courses were not accredited while the accredited ones expired since 2013 but no frantic measures were taken to effect the renewal of courses after five years.

The institution sting with a high level of sharp practice even after the suspension of the former management who fraudulently milk the Polytechnic dry.

Onlookers continued to ponder for how long it will take the visitors to the institution to bring to book those fingered in destroying the Polytechnic.
