The 24 lawmakers at the Nasarawa State House of Assembly (NSHA), today, rejected and sent back a Ramadan package of one bag of rice and sugar each, to Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura who extended the gift for the Muslim holy month.
The package was taken to the assembly complex along Shendam Road at about 9am, today, according to sources who told Daily Trust that it was offloaded from the two Toyota Hilux vans by staff of the complex, and packed by the main door leading to the chambers.

The members, Daily Trust gathered further, assembled at the complex at about 10:30, after the Clerk of the House, Mr. Ego Maikeffi Abashi informed them of the governor’s gift to them.
“Not all of them were around. But not less than 16 of them assembled at the complex. They met briefly and some began to move their bags into the vehicle. Some even drove out when the remaining members met again, and agreed that the governor’s gift be returned to him. Those who had earlier gone, were called back, and they also returned their own bags. It is a protest from members because they feel the governor is not being fair to them,” said a source who witnessed the drama that played out that morning.
Majority Leader of the House, Godiya Akwashiki who is also the chairman House Committee on Welfare confirmed when he spoke to Daily Trust at the complex that the House Clerk received the bags of rice and sugar.
But he did not confirm that members rejected and returned the package in protest. He said he was just returning from a trip to London, and had no details of what had happened earlier in the morning, other than that he was informed that the governor sent a Ramadan package of rice and sugar.
At about 4pm, two trucks with no registration plate numbers were loaded with the bags of rice and sugar and driven out of the complex.
Senior Special Assistant to the governor on Hospitality, Sufianu Rabiu Garba, who is also the chairman of the Ramadan package distribution committee, confirmed the return of the package to Government House. “I was not around, but my colleagues called to tell me that the consignment we sent to the assembly was returned. I don’t know for what reasons, but they were returned,” Garba said.
The lawmakers and Governor Al-Makura have had a long frosty relationship
