Meet Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, Nigerian Ambassador To Germany

Born March 12th, 1967, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar is a Nigerian Politician and diplomat from Bauchi State, Northeast Nigeria.

Ambassador Tuggar is a graduate of International Relations from the United States International University, San Diego California, while he had his Master’s Degree in the same International Studies from the University of Cambridge. He also has an M. A. International Security and attended the University of Bath. He is also a recipient of the Chevening Scholarship.

His journey into politics didn’t start today, as he was born into a political family in Gamawa Bauchi, his father was an Organizing Secretary of the defunct Northern People’s Congress before and after Nigerian Independence in 1960, and he would later become a Senator in the Second Republic.

In 2007 he won the election into the House of Representatives to represent Gamawa Federal Constituency of Bauchi State, from 2008-2011 as a lawmaker in the House of Representatives, he served as Chairman House Committee on Public Procurement; regulating government spending in the Oil and Gas Industry, Education, Health and Water Resources.

Tuggar was also the Deputy Chairman House Committee on Public Petitions, as well as a member of Committees on Petroleum (Upstream), Interior, and Labour; he was also a member of Committees on Petroleum (Upstream), Agriculture, Foreign Affairs, Legislative Budgeting, and Sub-Committee on Local Content.

While in the House of Representatives, he oversaw the creation of the National Council on Public Procurement and was a member of the House Committee that worked on the Local Content Bill with a focus on Oil and Gas.

In furtherance of his political career, in 2011, he contested for the office of Governor, Bauchi State under the platform of the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, he was also a member of the CPC Renewal Committee, Head of the Task Team on Guidelines for primaries, Congresses and Conventions from 2011-2012.
Tuggar 2015 was a governorship aspirant of the All-Progressives Congress, APC, he was also a member of the All-Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign; a Council Member of the Policy Research and Strategy Directorate of the APC Presidential Campaign Council.

The Nigerian Ambassador to Germany has also had a long stint in the private sector, having did his National Youth Service at Golden Service Limited, Kano, from 1998 to 2000 he was a Director, at Petroil Trading Limited, Lagos; while between 2006 and 2007 he was Member, Editorial Board, Daily Times of Nigeria.

Furthermore, from 1990 to 1991, he held the position of the Public Relations Officer, Tuguma Enterprises Limited, Kano; he was also Sales Manager between 1991 and 1993 for Tuguma Enterprises Limited, Kano. Then from 1993-1999, he became the Managing Director Tuguma Enterprises Limited, Kano.

Tuggar was also the Chief Executive Officer, of Nordic Oil, and Gas Services Limited Lagos from 1994 to 2017.

From 2001 to 2017 he was the Executive Director, Movido Exploration & Production Limited, Lagos; also an Executive Director from 2004-2017 in Occitania International Limited, Lagos; and was an Executive Director for Librod Energy Services Limited Port Harcourt from 2013 to 2015 Director, Librod Energy Services Limited, Port Harcourt.

He carried out a Strategy Development study in 2000 for Special Adviser to the Nigerian Senate President on Legislative and Public Affairs.

In August 2017, he was appointed the Nigerian Ambassador to Germany by former President Muhammadu Buhari. During his ambassadorship, he played a key role during the 23rd Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

He is married, with two children. He is an experienced organizational analyst, a professional in oil and gas consulting, and an advocate for policy implementation at the Federal and state Levels.
