  • Urges workers to resist anti-workers policies

As reactions still trailed the ongoing mass sack of the civil servants in the service of  Osun State government, a State based group, the Civil Societies Coalition for the Emancipation of Osun State (CSCEO) has described the present administration of Governor Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola as a source of sorrow to the good people of  the State, thereby calling on the workers through their organized Labour unions to resist every anti- worker policy of Rauf Aregbesola’s government in the State.

The Civil Society group also urged the State workforce to be battle ready as the State government has concluded plan to retrenchment thousands of workers in the service of the State government under the guise of financial quagmire caused by previous reckless spending of Mr. Aregbesola whereby the State was subjected to gargantuan indebtedness of foreign and local financial institutions and now being using over N2 billion of the monthly allocation to be serviced.

It however sympathized with the workers, especially the affected members of the Academic and Non-Academic Staff Union of the State owned Colleges of Education and Polytechnics and Medical Doctors which  they happened to be the first casualties of Aregbesola’s mass retrenchment regime, urging the affected workers and other members of the State worker force including; Local Government Staff, teaching and host of other workers in the Service of the State to reject this obnoxious actions of the State government which was contrary to the Labour law and section 16 & 17 of the amended 1999 Constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria.

In a Statement signed by the CSCEO’s Chairman, Comrade Adeniyi, Alimi Sulaiman and made available to newsmen in Osogbo on Sunday, after the emergency meeting of the group where they deliberated on the Aregbesola’s agenda mass retrenchment of all strata of the civil service in the State, they strongly condemned the State government action on the development, warning against set the cold war between the workers and the present administration ,alleging that most of the civil servants were being panicked now in their various homes because of  the fear of this illegal retrenchment as they could not identify the next victim of the  sack letters of the State government.

The group reiterated its support for the workers’ mass action against the obnoxious policy of Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, noting that if the State government were not stopped from further action on the matter, the issue might turn the State to the theatre of war in few months to come, calling on the well meaning people of the State, including the founding fathers and Monarchs to call Mr. Aregbesola to order before the matter would go out of hands.

They also rejected the reasons including redundancy, inappropriate qualification, poor academic development and declining productivity, being put forward by the state government as yard stick to sack the members of the academic and non-academic staff of the State tertiary institutions, insisting that the State government action had shown its insensitiveness to the plight of the State workers.

CSCEO then commended the trained Medical Doctors in the State for obeying the directive of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) that its members in the country should shun the jobs being advertised by the state government on the electronics and print media, explaining that when the State government has the requisite fund to pay the proposed about to employed Medical Doctors, while the government refused to use the same fund to pay the striking doctors in the State and allowed the sleeping dogs to lie. What an arrant nonsense?

It therefore called on the security agents in the State to beef up the security around the affected labour Union leaders because the State government and its agents might want to take the law into their hand for the insistence of the Union leaders not to yield to the Mr. Governor’s anti- workers policy of retrenchment, noting that the recent treat on the lives of some journalists in the State by Mr. Rauf Aregbesola still fresh in the memory of Osun masses as it affected the lives of former Governor Aregbesola’s Personal Assistant(P.A.), Mr. Shola Aderibigbe and host of others.

It would be recalled that over two hundreds (200) members of the Academic and Non-academic Staff Union in the state-owned tertiary institutions were recently laid off as a result of the ongoing controversial merger of the tertiary institutions in the state.
